Steps to make Dal Bukhara:
  1. Wash and soak the dal in enough water for about 8 hours.
  2. Than add 4 to 5 cups water with little salt and pressure cook the lentils for 5-6 whistles.
  3. Meanwhile grind onion and garlic cloves to make a paste and set aside to be used later.
  4. Similary grind tomatoes, green chillies and ginger piece to make tomato paste.
  5. After 5-6 whistles turn off the gas and let pressure settles down it's own,When the pressure settles down on it's own, open the lid of the pressure cooker.
  6. Now heat oil in a big wide pan or kadhai and add cumin seeds. Add onion paste to it and saute till it turns golden brown.
  7. Once onion paste is cooked add all the dry spices except garam masla and sauté again for a minute.
  8. Add tomato paste and roast till it start leaving oil from the edges.
  9. Add cooked dal into prepared masala with 2 cups of water and mix it very well.
  10. Now reduce the flame to low and let it cook for 55 -60 minutes.
  11. Meanwhile keep on stirring often, so that the dal don't stick at the bottom of the pan or kadai. Also mash some of the lentils while stirring.
  12. Now add cream (reserve 1tsp cream for garnishing) and butter to it and let it cook for 20-25more minutes.
  13. Once done,check the taste and add more red chilli powder or salt if required.
  14. Lastly sprinkle garam masala powder and stir well.
  15. Before serving add a tsp spoon of cream to dal.
  16. Serve hot dal bukhara with rice or with naan, paratha or rotis.
