  10. Get 4-5 Cloves
  11. Get 1 inch Cinnamon stick
  12. Take 2 Star anise
  13. Prepare 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  14. Get 2 Onions medium chopped
  15. Take 1 tbsp Tamarind pulp
  16. Take 1/4 tsp Grated nutmeg
  17. Make ready 2 tbsp Oil
  18. Make ready Handful coriander leaves
  19. Take to taste Salt

Goan Xacuti Chicken is a spicy chicken curry made with nutmeg and star anise. My fondest food memories always include eating thick Xacuti gravy with moist chicken pieces; with the spicy curry clinging onto little pieces of pav/ bread at quaint little busy Goan restaurants and homes. This Goan chicken xacuti is a tasty curry that - if time allows - will help you to really get to know many of the spices that are used in Indian cooking. Chicken xacuti is quite spicy but if spicy hot curries are not your thing, simply decrease the amount of chilli powder.

Steps to make Xacuti-Goan Chicken Curry:
  1. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a skillet and sauté the grated coconut till lightly brown. - - Transfer it to a blender jar.
  2. Now dry roast red chillies, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, black peppercorns, fennel seeds, carom seeds, poppy seeds, cloves, cinnamon and star anise till fragrant. - - Add it to the blender along with the coconut.
  3. Add the turmeric powder, coriander leaves, garlic,pods, onion and a little water and grind everything to a smooth paste. - Marinade the chicken with this green paste.keep the marinated chicken for a few hours
  4. For cooking chicken - Heat the remaining oil in a deep pan and sauté onions till browned.
  5. Add chicken pieces and sauté on high heat for two to three minutes. - - Add the spice paste and salt and stir well so that the chicken pieces are all coated with the spices.
  6. Next add two cups of water and tamarind pulp and mix thoroughly. Grate some nutmeg and add it to the gravy.
  7. When the mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat, cover and cook for about thirty minutes or till the chicken is tender.
  8. Serve hot with plain white rice.

Chicken Xacuti is a favourite amongst goans with its rich coconut taste and tropical taste. Clean chicken and cut into small pieces.
