  2. Take 25 grams mustard seeds
  3. Prepare 5 grams cumin seeds
  4. Prepare 8 cloves garlic
  5. Prepare 1 tea spoon turmuric powder

  8. Get 4 green chillies
  9. Get 2 big chopped tomatoes

This recipe goes really well with steamed rice and this is how traditionally it has been served in Odisha. Macha besara (in Odia ) is a fish curry where fish is cooked with mustard sauce. Traditionally a dry mango is added for sourness taste, which gives a very unique taste to the fish curry. Sharing my #favourite recipe which I have learned from my mother.

Instructions to make Pohala macha besara(Fried Pohala fish in tangy mustard gravy):
  1. Wash the fishes properly and add turmuric powder and salt to it. Keep for 10 mins
  2. Make a plain paste of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, 2 green chilli, garlic and half of the chopped onion.. Fry the fishes golden coloured.
  3. Heat a pan. Add 2 spoons mustard oil. Add red chilli and panchfutan, let it crack. Now add chopped onion And green chillies fry a little brown. Add mustard paste, fried potato and chopped tomato. Saute well. Now add turmuric powder, chilli powder, salt to it. Saute well.Add 200 ml water and let it boil for 10 min in Lower flame.
  4. Now add fried Pohala fishes and let it boil for 3 mins. We don't need much gravy in this curry. Add coriander leaves and serve it hot with steamed rice.

Clean and wash fishes in running water. Pohala Macha(Small Fish) Fry is an Oriya side dish recipe wherein fish is cooked as a whole and not cut Fry the marinated fish lightly on both the sides and keep aside to cool down. Take the fried Fish and Carefully put each fried fish dipped in Mustard Paste, Take it out and fry it till it turns golden. Once the Besara is almost complete, you can add Nadi (typical puri side item). Putting the pan again on medium flame take a little oil.
