Sambar is one of the most popular of recent trending foods in the world. It is simple, it is quick, it tastes yummy. It’s enjoyed by millions daily. Sambar is something which I have loved my whole life. They are fine and they look wonderful.
To get started with this particular recipe, we have to prepare a few ingredients. You can have sambar using 15 ingredients and 8 steps. Here is how you can achieve it.

- Take lemon tamarind small sized .
- Take one onion medium

Sambar is a traditional South Indian stew that goes well with idli, dosa, steamed rice or can be served as a soup. Any South Indian meal, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, would be considered incomplete without Sambhar or one of its variants. Sambar, a hot and spicy lentil soup with mixed vegetables, is a must have accompaniment for popular South Indian breakfast and lunch recipes like Idli, Dosa, Medu Vada, Steamed Rice etc. A few years back Sambar used to be defined as South Indian delicacy, confined only to the Southern states of India.
Instructions to make Sambar:
- Soak tur dal for half an hour(this is optional) and pressure cook for 10 minutes in 2 cups of water. Once pressure releases smash it with spoon.
- Soak tamarind in warm water and squeeze tamarind water and keep this aside.
- Cut onion, greenchilli, tomato, Pumpkin and radish into small pieces and keep aside.
- Heat a bottomed pan and add mustard seeds. Once mustard seeds splutter, add hing. Immediately add onions and green chillis and fry till onions become trasparent.
- Now add remaining veggies and saute them continuously for 5-10mins by keeping in medium low.
- Add sambar powder, turmeric powder, salt and chilli powder. Mix everything and simmer for 2minutes.
- Now add cooked dal and tamarind water. If required add more water and simmer for 10mins by covering.
- Once vegetables gets cooked, adjust salt and add coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice and papad.
I have used homemade sambar powder to make sambar recipe. But store-bought powder will work Wash and chop all the veggies you want to add to the sambar. I have used carrots, baingan (small.
