Sambar - south Indian lentil stew made with vegetables, lentils and a special blend of spices. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants here make really bad sambar. Sambar recipe with step by step photos.

Sambar is one of the most popular of recent trending meals on earth. It’s easy, it is quick, it tastes delicious. It is enjoyed by millions every day. They are nice and they look wonderful. Sambar is something which I have loved my whole life.

To get started with this recipe, we have to first prepare a few ingredients. You can have sambar using 14 ingredients and 6 steps. Here is how you can achieve that.

The ingredients needed to make Sambar:
  1. Prepare 1 cup toor dal
  2. Get 2 tomatoes
  3. Take 4 onions
  4. Prepare as required Veggies of your choice.(Optional) I used only drumsticks 1 big
  5. Prepare as per taste Salt
  6. Take 2 tbsp sambar masala
  7. Prepare 1 tsp chilli powder
  8. Get 1 tsp turmeric powder
  9. Make ready 1 lemon / 1 tbsp tamrind pulp
  10. Get 8-10 curry leaves
  11. Make ready For tempering-
  12. Make ready as required Oil
  13. Get pinch Hing
  14. Take some curry leaves

Sambar is a traditional South Indian stew that goes well with idli, dosa, steamed rice or can be served as a soup. Any South Indian meal, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, would be considered incomplete without Sambhar or one of its variants. Sambar, a hot and spicy lentil soup with mixed vegetables, is a must have accompaniment for popular South Indian breakfast and lunch recipes like Idli, Dosa, Medu Vada, Steamed Rice etc. A few years back Sambar used to be defined as South Indian delicacy, confined only to the Southern states of India.

Steps to make Sambar:
  1. In a pressure cooker add washed toor dal, tomatoes,onions and salt to taste and cook to 4-5 whistles.
  2. Once the pressure settles, blend the dal using blender.
  3. Now, add all the spices, lemon juice and boil on low flame for 15-20 mins. Add water to adjust the consistency.
  4. When done, heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds, a pinch of hing and add to dal.
  5. If adding veggies, chop and boil seperately. Add before tempering.at step 3.
  6. Serve hot.

I have used homemade sambar powder to make sambar recipe. But store-bought powder will work Wash and chop all the veggies you want to add to the sambar. I have used carrots, baingan (small.
